Experience Stockholm
Stockholm is one of Northern Europe’s most attractive destinations for live music, festivals, culture and major sporting events. Spread across islands and surrounded by water, the Swedish capital gives concerts and celebrations a distinctive Scandinavian setting—especially during the long summer evenings.
One of the city’s major cultural celebrations is Stockholm Culture Festival (Kulturfestivalen). For several days, central Stockholm becomes a large cultural stage with concerts, dance, performances, street entertainment and activities taking place across public spaces. Much of the programme is free, making the festival one of the city’s most accessible annual celebrations.
Stockholm Pride is another highlight of the summer calendar and one of Scandinavia’s largest Pride celebrations. Concerts, performances, exhibitions, parties and cultural activities take place throughout the week, culminating in a colourful parade through central Stockholm.
Music is a major part of Stockholm’s identity. The city that produced artists ranging from ABBA and Avicii to Swedish House Mafia continues to attract some of the world’s biggest touring performers. Major concerts are staged at venues such as Avicii Arena, 3Arena and Strawberry Arena, while smaller clubs and concert halls support a vibrant local and international music scene.
Summer also brings numerous outdoor concerts and festivals. Gröna Lund, located on the waterfront of Djurgården, has a long tradition of hosting live performances as part of its summer programme. Watching an international artist perform with Stockholm’s waterfront and amusement park as the setting offers a particularly distinctive live-music experience.
Sport creates some of Stockholm’s biggest annual gatherings. The Stockholm Marathon brings thousands of runners through the capital, with a route passing many of the city’s best-known districts and landmarks. Football matches, ice hockey and international sporting competitions add major events throughout the year.
Stockholm’s cultural scene extends far beyond music. Museums, theatres, contemporary art spaces and institutions such as the Royal Swedish Opera and Stockholm Concert Hall provide performances and exhibitions throughout the seasons. The city’s strong connections to music, design and technology also contribute to a constantly evolving creative scene.
December brings one of Sweden’s most internationally recognized traditions: the Nobel Prize ceremonies and celebrations. Although very different from a music festival, Nobel Week gives Stockholm a unique international atmosphere and highlights the city’s connection with science, culture and achievement.
Winter transforms Stockholm again. Christmas markets appear around historic Gamla Stan and other parts of the city, while lights, seasonal concerts and—when the weather cooperates—snow create an entirely different experience from the bright Scandinavian summer.
What makes Stockholm particularly memorable is the combination of major events, water and Nordic city life. Visitors can explore the islands and historic centre during the day, experience an international concert or festival in the evening, and remain only minutes from the waterfront.
From Stockholm Pride and Kulturfestivalen to huge international concerts, summer performances at Gröna Lund, the Stockholm Marathon and the Nobel celebrations, Stockholm combines world-class events with one of Europe’s most beautiful urban settings.
