Experience Vienna
Vienna is one of Europe’s most elegant destinations for live music, festivals, classical performances and spectacular cultural events. Famous for its imperial architecture and extraordinary musical heritage, the Austrian capital combines centuries of tradition with a lively contemporary concert and festival scene.
Music is inseparable from Vienna’s identity. The city of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss remains one of the world’s great centres for classical music. The Vienna State Opera, Musikverein and Konzerthaus host outstanding opera, orchestral and chamber performances throughout the year, making it possible to experience world-class music in some of Europe’s most beautiful concert halls.
One of Vienna’s most famous annual events is the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert. Broadcast internationally from the magnificent Golden Hall of the Musikverein, it has become one of the world’s best-known classical music traditions and gives Vienna a particularly glamorous beginning to the year.
Summer brings music outdoors. The Donauinselfest (Danube Island Festival) transforms an island in the Danube into an enormous open-air festival with multiple stages and a broad programme of pop, rock, electronic music and Austrian performers. It is renowned as one of the world’s largest free outdoor music festivals.
Another spectacular highlight is the Summer Night Concert (Sommernachtskonzert) by the Vienna Philharmonic. Held in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, the orchestra performs outdoors against the backdrop of one of Vienna’s most recognizable landmarks, creating an extraordinary combination of music, architecture and atmosphere.
Contemporary music also has a major presence. International touring artists regularly perform at venues such as Wiener Stadthalle, while festivals, clubs and alternative venues across the city offer electronic music, jazz, pop, rock and experimental performances.
Vienna’s famous ball season provides a completely different type of live experience. During winter, magnificent historic buildings host traditional Viennese balls featuring orchestras, formal dancing and elaborate ceremonies. The prestigious Vienna Opera Ball, held inside the State Opera, is the most internationally recognized of these events.
The city also celebrates film, food, art and culture through numerous annual festivals. Viennale, the Vienna International Film Festival, brings international cinema to historic theatres, while museums and galleries host major exhibitions throughout the year.
Christmas is another particularly beautiful time to experience Vienna. Traditional Christmas markets appear in front of landmarks such as Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn Palace, surrounded by illuminated streets, seasonal music and historic architecture.
What makes Vienna exceptional is its ability to make very different events feel spectacular. A visitor can experience an enormous outdoor festival on the Danube, hear the Vienna Philharmonic at Schönbrunn, attend an opera in a historic theatre and discover a contemporary concert—all within the same city.
From the Donauinselfest and Summer Night Concert at Schönbrunn to the New Year’s Concert, elegant Viennese balls and major international performances, Vienna combines world-class events with one of Europe’s most beautiful and historic settings.
